Anna Danielsson is Professor of War Studies. From April 2023 until the end of December 2025, she was the Deputy/Academic Head of the Department of War Studies at the Swedish Defence University.
Anna Danielsson received her PhD in Political Science from Uppsala University in 2014. She has been a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Department of Government, Uppsala University. Anna has also been a visiting researcher at the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University, and a visiting researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Political Science at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. She joined the Swedish Defence University in January 2019.
Anna Danielsson's research is situated at the nexus of war studies, the sociology of war, international political sociology, social theory, critical peacebuilding studies, and the history and sociology of knowledge. Thematically, she currently conducts research in two main areas. First, Anna works on issues pertaining to urban war and urban warfare, urbicide, and urban security. Second, she also conducts research on the epistemics of international interventions and military operations – with a focus on urban peacebuilding, urban reconstruction, and the entangled production of knowledge and space in urban peacebuilding interventions. Previously, Anna researched the relational dynamics of power and informal economies in post-/conflict environments.
Her work has been published in international and national high-quality outlets such as: Annals of the American Association of Geographers; European Journal of International Security; Review of International Studies; Routledge; Political Geography; Third World Quarterly; Critical Military Studies; Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding; Peacebuilding; Journal of International Relations and Development; Oxford University Press; Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding; and International Peacekeeping, amongst others. She has received research funding and fellowships from the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (Formas); the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet); and Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, amongst others.
Anna teaches at both undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels. She currently supervises three PhD students.
Starting in 2027, Anna will be one of three Editors of the journal Critical Military Studies.
