The course Research supervision - Teaching and learning in higher education 3 (Hped3) is aimed at you who supervise or will supervise doctoral students at the Swedish Defence University.

Aim and general layout of the course

The course is a higher education pedagogy course that focuses on PhD-level supervision. The aim of the course is to develop insights into and generate skills in research supervision. The course deals with the responsibilities and pedagogical approaches of the supervisor, current regulations, the division of roles, conflict management, supervisory talks, the dissertation process, becoming a member of a research community, gender and diversity issues, research ethics, and the act of dissertation defence.

The course is given as a seminar series of eight mandatory seminars and concludes with the collegial discussion of an independently written assignment. The seminars take place at the Swedish Defence University in Stockholm.

The point of departure for both the seminar discussions and the written assignment is the course literature, as well as the participants’ own experiences and reflections on supervision. Between the seminars the participant is expected to read and work with the assigned literature.

The scope of the course is 120 hours’ work, corresponding to 4,5 credits, including the mandatory seminars. The time needed to take the course is financed by your own department. It is therefore important that you have talked with your head of division about taking the course and that time has been set a side for you to take the course.

The course is offered twice a year, once in Swedish and once in English. The English version starts in November and ends in April, while the Swedish version starts in May and ends in December.

After completing the course, you will receive a certificate.

Course material

The books that are required reading for the course is handed out prior to or at the beginning of the course and are for you to keep after the course is concluded. The articles used you download yourself.
